What the Hungarian Cultural Knowledge Exam is Really Like
This week, someone in one of Hungary’s helpful immigration Facebook groups shared her experience taking the cultural knowledge exam. She’s staying anonymous (wise), but agreed I could share her story. And it’s one every applicant should read.
What is the Hungarian Cultural Knowledge Exam?
As of 2025, if you’re applying for a National Residence Card as a third-country national, this exam is now part of the deal. It’s written, in Hungarian, and tests your knowledge of:
- National holidays and history
- Symbols like the anthem and flag
- Literature, music, and notable figures
- Basic facts about Hungarian law and EU membership
All of it is based on an official study PDF provided by the government. That’s your bible. You won’t be asked about obscure medieval poets or Budapest’s best lángos, just the content in the guide.
A Real-Life Example (and Why It’ll Put You at Ease)
Here’s what our anonymous contributor shared:
“I took my exam today and honestly—it was much easier than I expected!”
“There were two versions: one multiple choice only, the other with short answer questions. I got the short answer version, which asked me to write two lines of the national anthem and answer whether Hungary is in the EU. (Yes. That was a 3-point yes/no question.)”
“The rest was simple matching and multiple choice. My Hungarian is below A1. I barely speak the language. But I studied the PDF and still passed!”
Honestly, that alone should give you hope. This isn’t a Hungarian grammar exam—it’s a knowledge check. And you can prep for it even if you’re still saying “szia” with a question mark at the end.
How to Study (Without Losing the Will to Live)
- Start with the PDF: Read it. Highlight keywords. If it helps, summarise each section in plain English or use DeepL for a clearer translation.
- Use ChatGPT: Ask it to quiz you with multiple choice questions based on the PDF. It can even explain tricky concepts.
- Memorise a few anthem lines: Not a full-on serenade—just two lines. Phonetic is fine.
- Use flashcards or apps: Quizlet or Anki can help you memorise dates, names, and symbols fast.
What to Expect on Exam Day
You’ll likely sit the test at the Budapest Metropolitan Government Office (Váci út 174), although future options may expand to other cities. It’s a one-hour, written exam. The format may include:
- 10–15 multiple choice questions
- Matching tasks (e.g. author to work)
- 1–2 short written questions
If you pass, they’ll let you know on the spot. Fail three times? You’re ineligible to reapply for the National Card that year. So yes, it matters—but don’t let it scare you.

Two lines from this patriotic classic might just earn you full marks—yes, really. The Hungarian cultural knowledge exam is more hymn book than history thesis.
Final Thoughts: You’ve Got This
The Hungarian cultural knowledge exam isn’t meant to be impossible. It’s meant to ensure you understand the basics of life in Hungary—its values, history, and cultural anchors. With the right preparation, even beginners with minimal Hungarian can pass confidently.

Is there any information on age criteria for kids for cultural exam?
From what age kid needs to give it?
Unfortunately, this seems to still be in a gray area. I will reach out again to one of our expert immigration lawyers and I will post if there are any updates. 🤞
