I don’t usually make sweeping declarations. But this one’s easy: everyone in Hungary should download the Életmentő app.

Not just foreigners. Not just pensioners. Not just people who like wandering off into the woods with questionable mobile signal. Everyone.

And yes, I realise that sounds dramatic. But I live in a place where we don’t technically have an address. Not one that makes any sense, anyway. So when I first learned that this free app exists, one that sends your exact GPS coordinates to emergency services with a single tap, I downloaded it immediately.

Because if you’ve ever tried to describe your hillside winehouse location in Hungarian, under pressure, to a dispatcher? You’ll understand why this is a game-changer.

What is the Életmentő App?

The Életmentő app (which literally means “life-saving” in Hungarian) was developed by the Hungarian National Ambulance Service together with Vodafone Hungary. It lets you request help from emergency services directly through your phone, and sends them your real-time location. No need to know the nearest cross street. No need to panic about explaining “we’re just past the bend with the plum tree.”

Best of all? You can set the language to English. Or Hungarian. Or German, Czech, Polish, Ukrainian, or Vietnamese.

Which means even if you’re not fluent, or you’re just flustered and struggling to get words out, you can still get help. Quickly.

Why This Matters No Matter Who You Are

When I first moved here, I assumed something like this already existed. I’d used similar apps in other countries. But after chatting with Hungarian friends and even a few paramedics, I realised that most people don’t know this app exists.

Not just expats. Hungarians too. It’s not heavily promoted. It’s not pre-installed on phones. You have to know to look for it.

That’s why I’m shouting about it now.

We spend so much time worrying about the paperwork and practicalities of living in Hungary – health insurance, house repairs, translating utility bills – but this is the one thing that could make the biggest difference in an actual emergency.

And it takes less than five minutes to set up.

My Own Rural Reality

We split our time between Budapest and the Balaton Highlands. That sounds romantic, and it is, but it’s also a logistical nightmare when it comes to addresses. We have no street number. No proper signage. If you’re not familiar with the area, good luck.

So when the Amazon man couldn’t find us and called from a neighbouring hilltop in frustration, I remember thinking: if that had been an ambulance, we’d have been in trouble.

With the Életmentő app, your location is sent directly to emergency services. It cuts through all the confusion. And when every second counts, that’s priceless.

What the Életmentő App Actually Does

  • One-tap Emergency Call: Press the red button and it connects you straight to emergency services.

  • Sends Your GPS Coordinates: So they know exactly where you are, even if you don’t.

  • Stores Your Medical Info: Blood type, allergies, chronic conditions, medication. You can add it all in advance.

  • Lets You Choose Your Language: Hungarian, English, or German.

  • Shows Nearby AEDs: If someone nearby needs a defibrillator, you can find the closest one.

  • Provides First Aid Instructions: So you know what to do while you wait.

Who Should Download It?

Let me be clear: this isn’t just for tourists or elderly relatives. If you live in Hungary – even part-time – you should have this on your phone.

Particularly if you:

  • Live in the countryside

  • Spend time hiking, cycling, or off the beaten path

  • Have a holiday home

  • Have kids, elderly parents, or anyone else you’re responsible for

  • Aren’t confident giving directions in Hungarian under stress

That covers most of us.

How to Download the Életmentő App

It’s free and works on both iOS and Android:

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Choose your language.
  2. Fill in your personal and medical info.
  3. Allow location permissions.
  4. That’s it.

I recommend testing the app (there’s a demo mode). It also works offline, as long as your GPS is enabled, so even if you’ve got no mobile data, it can still help save your life.

Not Just Another App

I’m not usually one for alarmist tech recommendations, most of the time I’m the one sighing when yet another app wants my email and shoe size. But this one’s different. It’s on my phone. It’s on Andrew’s. And after setting it up for my parents, I made sure my sister had it too. Because once you’ve lived through a few Hungarian “where even are we?” moments, you realise that getting found quickly matters more than you think. Whether you’re in Budapest or out among the vines like us, the Életmentő app makes sure help can find you – even when no one else can.

If you found this post helpful, please share it with friends, family, or anyone living in Hungary – you never know whose life it might help save.
