I’m writing this in the middle of a red heat alert, somewhere past 39°C, with parts of the country under water restrictions and the whole country moving at half speed. And I still can’t stop thinking about a cooler evening six weeks from now. My HOW TO HUNGARY September Social is on 16 September, and I’m telling you about it today, in the thick of August, not because anything’s changed, but because the last one sold out a month early and this one is already 70% gone.

Andrew and I host these wine socials three times a year, and my mother’s joining this one too, so brace for an unusually high number of people asking her for restaurant recommendations.

What Actually Happens on the Night

State the plan first: tasty nibbles, excellent conversation, great wine from Nimród Kovács Winery, and DJ Woods, also known as my husband, on the decks. The evening runs from 18:00 to 21:30 at KLUSTER Budapest, close enough to Astoria that you can walk it from most of downtown.

The terrace is the real bonus. Once the sun starts dropping, take your glass outside and watch Astoria do its thing below you while the evening cools off around you, one of the better views in the city for the price of a ticket. Inside, the wine keeps moving, the DJ keeps the room loose, and nobody’s watching the clock.

The crowd is the real draw too. Internationals who’ve been here for years, Hungarians who know the city inside out, experts who’ve spoken at my events, and readers who found HOW TO HUNGARY last month, all in the same room. It’s a mix you won’t find anywhere else in Budapest.

Why I’m Telling You Six Weeks Early

I know early August is a strange time to be thinking about September. But the Spring Social sold out a full month before the date, and I don’t want you finding out in late August that you’ve missed it. I’ll be honest, planning a September evening from inside a red heat alert feels a little absurd. But that’s rather the point. By the time this comes round, the heat will have broken, the terrace will be bearable again, and I’ll be standing there with a glass of wine, genuinely glad to see you.
