Can You Be Self-Employed on a Family Permit in Hungary?

by | Aug 25, 2026 | Life Admin & Bureaucracy | 0 comments

Updated August 2026. What changed this year: Hungary’s 2024 immigration overhaul is now fully in force, so the newer permit names (guest worker, guest self-employment, White Card) sit alongside the older family reunification permit. That mix is why so many people miss the option in this post.

Can You Be Self-Employed on a Family Permit in Hungary? Yes. If you hold a Hungarian residence permit for family reunification, you can usually register as a sole trader, an egyéni vállalkozó, and invoice clients legally. Most people are surprised this is even allowed. They have spent months hearing how hard it is for a third-country national to work in Hungary, even one married to a Hungarian, so a legal way to earn a living sounds too good to be true. It is real. Being self-employed on a family permit is one of the quietest ways to do it, and most people never find it because they confuse it with a different permit entirely.

I moved to Hungary in 2017 and built my business here, and I host regular immigration events where this question comes up constantly. Everything below is drawn from the EU Immigration Portal and Hungary’s National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, checked in August 2026. It is general information, not individual legal or tax advice.

The three situations, side by side

The confusion clears up fast. You just separate three things: a job with an employer, working for yourself, and running a company. Your permit treats them differently.

What you want to do Does a family reunification permit cover it?
Take a job with a Hungarian employer, on a contract Not automatically. You get work rights only if your permit went through the single application procedure, with the employer and job named on it.
Invoice clients as a sole trader (egyéni vállalkozó) Yes, generally. A family permit is a listed status for registering as a self-employed entrepreneur.
Own a company and personally do paid work in it It depends. Owning a company is one thing. Doing paid work inside it can point to guest self-employment.

One quick note on that first row. If your spouse is a Hungarian citizen, your right to work is wider. I cover that below.

Why this option surprises people

Getting a work permit is genuinely hard for third-country nationals right now. Being married to a Hungarian does not make it automatic. So people expect a closed door. Then they hear they can register as a sole trader on the permit they already hold. The usual reaction is a pause, then relief.

Why do so few people know about it? The 2024 reforms added many new permit names. Those names fill every forum thread and every queue at the immigration office. The self-employment route sits quietly inside an older permit. It gets drowned out.

I have watched people at my events realize something mid-sentence. They had turned down paid work for a year. They were allowed to take it all along. That is the part I most want you to hear. If your family life is the basis of your stay, you can very likely earn a living for yourself here.

Self-Employed on a Family Permit: How It Works

A family reunification permit lets a non-EU national register as an egyéni vállalkozó. So you can usually set up as a sole trader and start invoicing. You do not need to switch permits. The EU Immigration Portal lists family reunification directly as a status that allows self-employed registration, next to work, study, and humanitarian permits.

Employment is different. A family permit does not, by itself, let you take a salaried job with a Hungarian employer. For that, your permit must go through the single application procedure, with the employer and role named on it. Same permit, two answers. It depends on whether you invoice clients or sign an employment contract.

Here it is in plain terms. Do you want to consult, design, write, code, coach, or run your own small business and bill clients? Your family permit usually covers that. Do you want a salaried job at a Hungarian company? That usually needs separate permission, which a family reunification permit does not give on its own. There is one big exception, and it matters to a lot of readers.

If your spouse is a Hungarian citizen

Married to a Hungarian citizen? Your route is different, and usually more open. You can normally apply for a residence permit as a family member of a Hungarian citizen. That status generally lets you take a salaried job too, not only sole-trader work. It is not caught by the nationality limits that now restrict standard work permits. So you may have both doors open, employment and self-employment.

There is a catch…The work permit still needs approval from the immigration office (OIF), and that approval is not a formality. Many employers do not understand this status. They see the word “permit” and assume the long work-permit process, so they hesitate to hire you. Some start it and watch it stall at the office. So the right exists on paper, but plenty of people never get across the line. Go into a job hunt ready to explain your status in plain terms. A lawyer or accountant who can vouch for it helps a lot.

These employment rules shifted recently, and some offices have applied them unevenly. I covered the detail in our update on the new employment rules. If a job is your plan, read that next, then check your own case with a lawyer.

How to register as an egyéni vállalkozó

Registration is free. Most residents do it online through NAV’s Ügysegéd portal. As a third-country national, you may need to start at a Government Office or Document Service Centre instead. Reporting the start, change, or end of your activity costs no state fee.

Before your first invoice, get these ready:

  • A valid family reunification permit and passport.
  • A Hungarian tax identification number.
  • Your registration as an egyéni vállalkozó, filed online or in person.
  • Any licence your specific work needs. Regulated professions have extra rules. Check this before you take on a client, not after.
  • An accountant to register you for tax, social security, VAT, invoicing, and local business tax.

One thing to know early. A sole trader is personally liable for the business. That includes personal assets. No company shield sits between you and the debts. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to set up your tax properly from day one.

The permit people confuse it with

Guest self-employment is a separate permit. It is for people whose main reason to stay in Hungary is running their own business or acting as an executive. This is the one people mix up with sole-trader work. The mix-up is expensive. Guest self-employment is valid for one year at first. You can extend it, but only to three years from the first issue. During that time, and after it ends, you cannot apply for a different permit from inside Hungary. Holders also cannot get a national residence card. So it closes off the usual path to permanent residence.

If someone tells you to switch to this, slow down. Is your family life still the real reason you live here? Then you do not need guest self-employment just because you started freelancing. Your family permit already covers that.

Things change if your business becomes your main reason to stay. They also change if you plan to form and run a company yourself. In those cases, talk to a Hungarian immigration lawyer before you register or change anything.

Family permit rules worth watching

Your family permit depends on your sponsor. It cannot outlast their permit or your passport. The standard maximum is three years, renewable for another three. If your sponsor is a Hungarian citizen with permanent residence, that limit is higher. Your permit is tied to your sponsor’s status. If theirs changes, yours can change too.

The sponsor’s permit type matters the other way too. Some sponsor permits limit family reunification. These include employment, guest worker, White Card, study, trainee, and voluntary-service permits. A sponsor on guest self-employment usually needs to hold it for a year first. If you are still applying, check this before you count on the self-employment plan.

A quick word on tax

Registration is free. Your tax scheme is a separate choice. Make it with an accountant before your first invoice, not after. Many small sole traders use the flat-rate scheme (átalányadó). The VAT-exempt threshold rose to 20 million HUF for 2026. That keeps many smaller businesses out of VAT paperwork. These numbers change most years, so treat them as a starting point. Confirm the current figures when you register. Our Hungarian tax ID guide covers the number you need first.

Questions people actually ask

Can I work for a Hungarian company on my family permit? It depends on who your sponsor is. If your spouse is a third-country national, a job is not automatic. Your permit must go through the single application procedure, with the employer and role named on it. If your spouse is a Hungarian citizen, your status usually lets you take a job as well, and the nationality limits on work permits do not catch you. Self-employment works in both cases.

Do I need a new permit to become a sole trader? Usually not. A family reunification permit is a listed status for registering as an egyéni vállalkozó. So most spouses can register without changing their permit. This can change later. If your business becomes the main reason for your stay, a different route may apply. Until then, your family permit usually carries the right.

How much does it cost to register as an egyéni vállalkozó? The registration itself is free. Your real costs come afterward. You pay for an accountant, your monthly contributions, and your chosen tax scheme. Budget for those before your first invoice. The paperwork to register carries no state fee.

Could my spouse’s permit type stop me from doing this? It can affect the family permit itself. Some sponsor permits limit family reunification. These include employment, guest worker, White Card, and study permits. A sponsor on guest self-employment usually needs a year in that status first. If you are still applying, check your sponsor’s permit type early.

Should I switch to the guest self-employment permit? Usually no, if your family life is still the basis of your stay. Guest self-employment caps at three years. It blocks you from applying for another permit from inside Hungary. It also closes off the national residence card. Do not give up a valid family permit for it without written confirmation from the immigration authority or a lawyer.

Who to ask before you start

Do you want certainty, not just a general yes? Talk to an accountant first. They register most sole traders anyway. They will tell you quickly if your case is simple or needs a closer look. If you have your own immigration lawyer, run it past them too.

You can also write to the immigration office and ask directly. Be realistic, though. A reply can be slow, and it may never come. So do not wait on it before you plan. If you do write, keep the question simple: may I register as an egyéni vállalkozó while keeping my family reunification permit? Add your nationality, your permit’s expiry date, your spouse’s permit type, and the business you plan to run. Either way, an accountant or a lawyer gives you a straight answer in days, not months.

Autumn is when this question lands hardest. People arrive over summer. They settle in September. They start thinking about how to earn by October. If that is you, sort the permit question and the tax setup in the right order. You will find this is one of the friendlier corners of Hungarian bureaucracy. My ebook covers the wider settling-in map: permits, tax numbers, address cards, and health insurance, all in one place.
